尼日利亚仍然在小规模农业经济中占据主导地位。由于政府经费严重不足，农业技术人员对新兴农业科技了解甚少。因此，农业技术推广进展缓慢。农民常用的农具仍然是传统的短锄头和砍刀。农具简单落后，劳动强度大，效率低。
在农作物种植方面，技术非常落后。许多地区的水稻种植采用直播方式进行，导致水稻播种时间过长、行距过短影响通风、水稻营养不良等诸多问题。所有这些因素最终都会影响水稻产量。
在农田管理中，由于缺乏必要的技术，人们没有修剪树木、施肥、除草等意识。
