农作物收获后，部分农作物需要破碎，破碎后的秸秆可以返回田间，增加土壤的营养。秸秆粉碎机需要连接拖拉机才能工作，具有操作人员少、组织方便、人工成本低等优点。
缺点是破碎时限制较多，如野外雨水、泥浆等。而且，破碎后，压缩比可达1/5～1/15，有利于秸秆的运输和储存，适合大型牲畜牧场。

粉碎后的秸秆还可以用打捆裹包机进行捆扎，减少了秸秆的储存空间。形状为圆形，便于运输，一般可长期保存。
